The Vitality of Mental Health Awareness in Youth

By SAIDI Sanaa

Mental health awareness is crucial for youth for three main reasons:

1) It helps promote overall well-being; 2) It prevents the development of potential mental health problems; and 3) It reduces stigma and misconceptions. Promoting mental health among youth provides them with the awareness and resources to seek in case of dysfunctions or challenges they might face along the way. It also helps them engage effectively in the community and contribute to their overall productivity.

According to a World Health Organization study, one out of every six people worldwide is between the ages of 10 and 19, making mental health vital to individuals’ overall well-being. This is especially important for youth. It is known that this age group faces a challenging phase because of the different changes that happen on a physical, emotional, and social level. Raising awareness among this group of youngsters is essential to prevent psychological threats and provide them with the necessary tools for this transformative journey.

Breaking down stigma and misconceptions around mental health in youth is a primary pillar of raising awareness around this topic. Anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts aren’t truly understood by the community in general or by youth specifically. Individuals dealing with those challenges usually lack support and guidance in their challenging journey. The pressure on their shoulders is quite high, mainly because of the perception that is projected onto them by society. As they face radical changes on a physical and emotional level, their misunderstanding of the situation leads to the essence of some rebellious behaviors that can transform into serious mental health issues. So spreading awareness and supporting them with the right resources is not only helpful but crucial to their overall well-being.

Preventing mental health problems is another pillar of the importance of raising awareness about the cause. The earlier the intervention to discuss those challenges is discussed, the more effective and efficient the result of preventing them will be. Mental health issues can develop quite quickly, which can lead to some severe consequences. In the case of anxiety, for instance, if it is identified at an early stage, preventing it from becoming chronic is possible. Promoting mental health issues can also educate this generation about the results of some common problems they are facing, such as bullying, isolation, and even academic stress. Addressing those issues helps prevent severe consequences for both the individual and the community.

Improvement in the overall quality of life of youth has been proven to be a result of their mental health awareness. The fact that they can identify certain inner mechanisms gives them clarity and understanding of their emotions. With the right tools and resources, they can ask for help and manage their behavior and emotions in a better way. This approach leads to the establishment of healthier interactions and relationships with their families and community. It also leads to better academic performance and a greater sense of responsibility and resilience.

Additionally, raising awareness about mental health issues and struggles helps reduce the rates of both suicide and self-harm among youth. Suicide being a leading cause of death in this age range is a strong reason to keep discussing those mental struggles among youth. Most attempts at self-harm are usually started at an early age, which brings us back to the importance of addressing mental health in this young community. Raising awareness can save lives and contribute to the creation of functioning young adults within society.

Moreover, mental health awareness is an essential tool to promote positive mental health among this age range, push them to be productive, and engage them positively with society. Youth with good mental health are more likely to engage, contribute, and drive meaningful relationships with their communities. Those same individuals are equipped with the will and the ability to pursue a successful academic career as well as a professional one. The making of healthy youth is key to an homogenic and productive society.

In conclusion, mental health awareness is extremely important and essentially crucial to preventing youth from facing chronic issues as well as providing them with the right tools to identify the different radical changes they will face in this specific age range. Raising awareness about mental health saves lives and prevents families and individuals from dealing with irreplaceable loss. It is also an important factor to create a better future for the generations that will lead society and make it a happy and healthy place to thrive.
