Death of many Covid 19 patients in Egypt due to a sudden interruption of oxygen

Social media users in Egypt have been angrily sharing posts about two disasters that occurred during the past hours. The first is in Zefta Hospital in Gharbia Governorate, and the second is in the Isolation Hospital in Al Hussainiya City in Sharkia Governorate, after the death of Corona patients due to the sudden interruption of oxygen in the intensive care rooms.

Tweeters circulated videos and pictures of the tragedy, showing the confusion of the nursing staff and doctors. The most popular video shows a relative of one of the patients filming the intensive care rooms full of nothing but corpses and the medical staff, loud beeps coming from all the rooms and a nurse sitting on the ground in a foetus position shocked and not able to say a word.

However, Mamdouh Ghurab, the governor of Sharqia, denied in an official statement the news that « 7 cases of Coronavirus patients died in the Hussainiya Central Hospital due to the lack of oxygen provided by the hospital  » and claimed that « the number of the dead is only 4 cases and they were on ventilators and their death was a natural result of their deteriorating condition due to infection with the Coronavirus and that they have chronic diseases’’.

Despite the government’s attempt to deny the two incidents, and then return and open an investigation into them, tweeters launched the hashtags #ZeftaHospital and #HussainiyaHospital, to attack the regime and the Ministry of Health, and accuse the government of neglect and disdain for the lives of Egyptians.

Many Egyptian newspapers confirmed that the Prosecutor of the Husseiniya Center in Sharkia Governorate summoned the director of Al Hussainiya Central Hospital, and a number of doctors, to listen to their statements regarding the death of Corona virus patients who are being held in intensive care, and clarify the medical condition of the deceased.

According the the World Health Organisation, the total number of deaths due to Covid-19 in Egypt is 1 831 412 as of today the 3d of January 2021, and in the critical situation that the country is facing, it is expected to see a huge growth in a very short amount of time.
